W. Edwards Deming "change is not necessary, survival is optional" board at B I business.com: It IS your B I business! *

xx Deming Scholars MBA Program - because, "survival is optional"
July 01, 2008, 01:53:27 PM by combinator
W. Edwards Deming, the unassuming statistician from Wyoming, is attributed with having said "Change is not necessary.  Survival is optional."

Fordham University is leading the charge, leading the change and leveraging the longest lever with its' Deming Scholars MBA program in da Boogie Down Bronx, home of Archie - the redheaded one - not the guy from Queens portrayed by the brilliant Shakespearean actor Caroll O'Connor, although he was born there.

In addition to adding value to the world by rebuilding the industrial base of the Information Age you also have access to the Bronx Botanical Gardens.

xx Deming on intrinsic motivation. Don't just remodel the prison - get out of it.
July 01, 2008, 10:19:25 AM by combinator
W. Edwards Deming, this unassuming statistician from Wyoming, focuses here on intrinsic motivation of individual human resources to transform industry through cooperation.

He says "Extrinsic motivation (traditional management by objectives - performance appraisal) in the extreme, replaces the intrinsic motivation we are born with.  Self esteem, dignity, cooperation, curiosity, a yearning for learning, these attributes are high at the beginning of life, but are gradually crushed out, diminished, year-by-year throughout life...Why crush them out?  Why not nurture them?"

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/kCL3sewRbkI&rel=0" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/kCL3sewRbkI&rel=0</a>

This principle is at the heart of the change-management program that rebuilt Japan's infrastructure following WWII (and why the Deming Award remains the most prestigious prize in Japan).  Let's bring it home to America because, as Mr. Deming warned "Change is not necessary.  Survival is optional."

This 1992 vid shows Deming at age 92 giving the wisdom of the ages:
"Don't just remodel the prison - get out of it."
"Restore the individual through the power of human resource."
Nurture "the intrinsic motivation that people are born with."
"Everyone who enjoys his work is a pleasure to work with."
"Joy in work.  Joy in learning." - "Everyone will win."

Legendary management theorist W. Edwards Deming speaks about the transformation in our capitalistic system that is possible...beyond competition to cooperation...to a world where "everyone can win; there will be no losers". This is from his 1992 presentation "The New Economics". See also his book by the same name.

The United States condemned China for using prison labor to produce products for their economy. Well If you can't beat them join them. 37 states have authorized prison labor to produce products. All of the major companies like IBM, Microsoft, Target, HP are running to take advantage of this cheap labor source. We have retreated from the high ground and got in bed with the profiters on wall street. Correction Corporation of America and the Geo Group are 1) and 2) in the private prison industries. Wall street loves it as millions of dollars of profit is being made off the labor of prisoners. Why should you care as long as Target sells you the TV at the right price. You should care as Americans are being taken advantaged of. Do You Care?
